Description

The Chord Circle (Circle of 5ths) is foundational for understanding how chords in music fit together so beautifully in a way that only God could have designed. Every piano student and every piano player needs one that they can refer to often. Use it when learning chords, key signatures, minor chords, cadences, etc.

The more you look at it and use it, the more gems you will find in it. Here's a few to get you started . . .

• It's a circle because if you place your hand in C position, your 5 lands on G. Then place your hand in G position and your 5 lands on D. You can continue around the chord circle.

• It is called a "Circle of 5ths" because it uses 5 notes to move to each new position.

• The letters around the circle are the letters of the 12 key signatures.

• F, C, G is in the pie piece that has 3 white keys because those chords are all on white keys. D, A, E chords all have one white key, a black key in the middle, and then another white key, etc.

• Cadences are formed by the chords that are neighbors to each other on the chord circle.

• If there is one sharp in a key signature, it is always F sharp. Two sharps are always F and C. Three sharps are always F, C and G. Wait a minute . . . that follows the chord circle, too. F . . . C. . . G . . . four sharps must include D!

• The small letters around the chord circle are the relative minor key signatures.
